Diofort PPS-based high-tenacity multifilament yarn allows new applications

Jan Dortmans, Diolen Industrial Fibers, Arnhem/The Netherlands

As is well known, it is not easy to survive in the highly competitive global fiber market. A few years ago Diolen Industrial Fibers decided to restructure its operations in combination with modernization of the various production processes. Furthermore, new methods were used to actively develop new and attractive business opportunities on top of Diolen's core business. Recently Diolen has launched Diofort, the first PPS-based, high-tenacity multifilament yarn that allows high-end applications to perform at levels that had not been possible until now. Whether gas filtration, aircraft composites or under the car bonnet, Diofort can meet the extreme levels of performance and reliability required when other industrial fibers fall short.

Tailoring of commingled yarns for effective composite properties

Edith Mäder, Christina Rothe, Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden, Dresden/Germany

A unique melt spinning equipment for E glass is compatibly combined with a melt spinning extruder to manufacture commingled yarns. The in-situ commingling enables to combine homogeneously both glass and polypropylene filament arrays in one processing step and without fiber damage compared to commingling by air texturing. Best composite performance is achieved with a sizing for glass fibers consisting of aminosilane and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene film former, which enable a good strand integrity with the polypropylene yarn. The results of fundamental research on variation of technological processing conditions like diameter ratios, draw ratios, variation of cooling conditions and arrangements of intermingling are reported for glass fiber/polypropylene systems.

Testing on morphology of blended air-textured yarn using EIB

Jing Zhang, Zhilong Zhang, Shanyuan Wang, Donghua University, Shanghai/PR China

With an increase in the overfeed ratio of effect yarn (OFRE), the loop number of 0.5 mm is firstly raised and then decreased, while that of other height tends to constantly increase. At lower OFRE, loop number is reduced with an increase in loop height, and the distribution of loop number along height almost follows an exponential curve. With the increase in the OFRE, the distribution curve shape gradually changes and eventually exhibits a quadratic curve. The graphic profile qualitatively illustrates the yarn thickness as well as its variation including yarn core and overall yarn, which is identical to the findings from diameter test.
