    From Russia with Love

It was 1963 when James Bond, alias Sean Connery, greeted the world from Moscow ... a time when it was almost impossible to find a restaurant worthy of the name in the Russian capital. Today, there are over 4,000 restaurants in Moscow - an extremely young and explosively expanding market that, according to local sources, is currently worth US $2.5-3 bn. And hardly anywhere else in Europe is the scene so dominated by chains as there. A market overview from a western perspective.

    Moscow Goes Casual

The calm before the storm is how insiders describe the present condition of Moscow's fine dining market. While top restaurants have been flourishing in the years following the crisis in 1998, Muscovites nowadays obviously prefer more casual venues, offering a less formal, multi-purpose eating & drinking experience. Restaurateur Arkady Novikov has been a pioneer in this 'democratic' field for several years. His experiments have scaled new heights with the recently opened Aist restaurant, where many Muscovites pop in just for a cup of coffee. Deregulation is the buzzword. Report by Anna Ludkovskaya, Moyo Delo Restaurant.Food Service, Moscow.

    Breaking the Ice in Russia

Russia is now McDonald's fifth largest European territory and one of its fastest growing markets worldwide with the second highest guest counts. However, gaining a foothold in 1990 only came after a 15 year uphill challenge and required risky new strategies, such as building a $45 m food and distribution plant, as well as patience. Revival in Russia

In Russia, things once again look promising for American fast-food. The financial crisis in 1998 has now been forgotten. Chains like Pizza Hut and KFC have staged a come-back in Russia, and others, like McDonald's and Sbarro, are investing heavily in new outlets.
