USA: Shift Is Underway

Last year, the NRN Top 100 tallied aggregate sales of US$ 222.1 bn, representing a 3.2% increase compared with preceding-year sales, which had increased 5.6% to US$ 215.2 bn. The two-plus-point retreat in last-year aggregate sales growth reflects the challenges US restaurants faced in 2013. Beverage-snack concepts, Mexican limited service restaurants and bakery-cafés gained significant market share. www.nrn.com

Strong Potential for Growth

The US magazine Nation’s Restaurant News has selected five emerging foodservice brands as its 2014 Hot Concepts. The award recognizes forward- thinking companies at the leading edge of foodservice that also show strong potential for growth. This year’s honorees are strong on healthy eating and made-from-scratch freshness, while also featuring a chicken segment contender and an operator in the less populated bacon-burger niche. www.nrn.com
