Effective saving of energy in the finishing of textiles

Effective saving of energy in the finishing of textiles

Scientists of the ITV have proposed reducing considerable amounts of energy in the textile finishing industry by using a combination of corona pretreatment and spray application of surface-effective finishing agents. This approach was tested in cooperation with partners from textile finishing and mechanical engineering as well as textile auxiliary manufacturers. Besides the ITV, the mechanical engineering company Ahlbrandt System and the textile finishing company Knopf’s Sohn had key positions in the triannual project. It was supervised by the project management agency in Karlsruhe/Germany. Renewable antimicrobials for textile finishing

The goal of this research was to introduce new sustainable materials in textile finishing, requiring minor optimization for industrial use and up-scaling. Since finishes aim to functionalize the textiles, there is need for bio-additives. Much attention is paid to antimicrobial textiles due to the new biocide regulation. The application of renewable antimicrobials on textiles is described.

ITMA 2011

Green, green, green are all of my....

Maike Rabe, Boris Mahltig Forschungsinstitut für Textil und Bekleidung der Hochschule Niederrhein, Mönchengladbach/ Germany Ulrich Eicken, Jörg Schrick Hochschule Niederrhein, Mönchengladbach/ Germany

...machines. Green, green, green is everything I have? The first impression created by the suppliers of machines and tools for textile finishing is that all of them focus on resource efficiency individually. The color "green" is dominating. Arriving at the hall in which the printing machines are shown one can see immediately: textile finishing is still colorful. The highlight of the textile finishing machines at ITMA 2011 is the inkjet printing technology which has reached the level of rotary screen printing in terms of processing speed. Therefore this ITMA report is dedicated to innovations in textile finishing, especially to those in printing. Following that an overview of dyeing machines, tools and their corresponding process control devices is given. Here, the major approach to resource efficiency is the greatest innovation, indeed. The last paragraph of this report deals with novelties in the field of textile-finishing agents and dyestuffs.

Miniaturized standard Ames test for the evaluation of textile dyes

Ismene Jäger, Christoph Hafner Hydrotox - Labor für Ökotoxikologie und Gewässerschutz GmbH, Freiburg/Germany

The Salmonella reverse mutation assay (Ames test, OECD 471) is a standard assay for the examination of mutagenic effects in chemicals, e.g. in the European REACh strategy. In the project 'Novel Sustainable Bioprocesses for European Color Industry' (Sophied, NMP2-CT-2004-505899) a fast mutagenicity test was needed for the screening of huge amounts of newly developed textile dye samples where only small sample volumes were available. The standard Ames test [1] was therefore compared with a miniaturized test version (mini Ames test). It could be shown, that the mini Ames test is a suitable test method for fast mutagenicity screening of colored samples. It needs less material and less time effort than the standard version and is therefore very cost effective.

Trends, highlights and visions for the textile finisher

Evelyn Lempa Krefeld/Germany

The leading trade fair for textile machinery manufacturers, ITMA, has attracted more trade visitors from more countries to Munich in 2007 than ever before. The record number of exhibitors from 38 countries and a contingency of over 80 % international visitors reflects the globalization of the textile industry. Most exhibitors focused on worldwide important subjects and problems, such as reduction of water and energy consumption, the use of a lot of new electronic equipment and optimized controlling functions.

Combined use of enzymes in the pretreatment of cotton

Klaus Opwis, Dierk Knittel, Eckhard Schollmeyer, Deutsches Textilforschungszentrum Nord-West e.V., Krefeld/Germany Christian Dörfler, Herbert Bachus, CHT R. Beitlich GmbH, Tübingen/Germany Axel Köppe, Ulf Köppe, Textilveredlung an der Wiese, Lörrach/

A successful strategy for the combined use of a-amylase, hemicellulase and pectinase in the pretreatment of cotton is described. After hot bleaching enzymatically pre-treated cotton has similar or even better properties than conventional desized and alkaline scoured cotton. So the combined use of the enzyme mixture allows to leave out the alkaline scouring without a loss of quality in the finishing result. The described enzymatic procedure corresponds with a significant lower demand of energy, water, chemicals, time and therefore costs. So it has advantages as well in terms of ecology as in economy.
