Powered by the World Cup

Within the last twelve months, Russia’s 40 largest restaurant groups increased their total unit number by almost 11%, continuing a positive trend that had taken off during the previous year. While consumers tend to visit restaurants more frequently, they are still very careful with their spending: the average check stagnates, if not falls, even in the QSR sector. In the summer, the foodservice industry experienced a brief but bright rise in sales due to the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Julia Matveeva, editor-in-chief of FoodService magazine Russia, reports

The Year of Fast-food and Delivery

After a few years of stagnation, the Russian foodservice market is showing initial timid signs of recovery. Over the last twelve months, Russia’s 40 largest restaurant groups grew by more than 10% in terms of unit numbers, getting back to the rate of growth before the start of the economic downturn at the end of 2014. However, consumers are still spending money on eating out very carefully and are not in a hurry to increase the number of restaurant visits. Report by Julia Matveeva, editor-in-chief of Foodservice Russia trade magazine.

Russia: Learning to Adapt

The economic storm that started in Russia two years ago still affects the local foodservice market. A weak rouble, caused by the low price of oil, forces consumers to change their eating habits and to choose more affordable options. Somehow, foodservice providers and their chefs have learned to adapt to the new business realities. Julia Matveeva reports.

Russia: Doing Business in Hard Times

The last twelve months have been the hardest for the Russian foodservice market in many years. The economic situation is forcing restaurant groups to switch over from ‘how to grow’ to ‘how to survive’, and to find ways of adapting to the weak rouble, the rising cost of foodstuffs and the limited purchasing power of consumers. Julia Matveeva reports.

Staying Alive

The Ukrainian crisis, the food embargo, the depreciation of the rouble and dropping purchasing power: 2014 was quite an eventful year for the Russian market. The overall economic recession and the decline in consumption challenged the profitability of many restaurant projects. ‘FoodService‘ magazine Russia talked to restaurant operators from four Russian cities about the difficulties their businesses face today and the measures they are taking to overcome them. By Julia Matveeva.

Russia: Navigating in Stormy Waters

The current year proved quite eventful for the Russian foodservice market. A law that prohibits smoking in restaurants, bars, and hotels came into effect on June 1. However, a true challenge for the industry came two months later, when, in response to the economic sanctions imposed over the Ukraine crisis, Russia announced a one-year ban on certain agricultural produce, foods and raw materials from the EU, Norway, Canada, Australia, and the USA. Julia Matveeva reports.
